Spark plugs must be fitted with the correct heat range to optimize efficient combustion and protect the engine from overheating. The Champion N5C spark plug is a relatively hot spark plug with a heat range comparable to the NGK B6ES. This spark plug is appropriate for 1979-1983 Triumph 750 twins with 7.9:1 compression ratio pistons. The Champion N5C has 14mm threads, thread reach of 19mm, a non-projected tip configuration, and removable terminals for fitment with various spark plug cap types. Champion N5C standard spark plugs have a copper core for improved conduction. The higher heat range may result in detonation in some machines that require a colder spark plug and may not be suitable for all vintage British motorcycles.
The spark plug fires the fuel mixture charge as it enters the combustion chamber, resulting in combustion and power. Spark plugs must be gapped correctly and free of heavy carbon and oil deposits to provide a strong spark.
The spark plug is threaded into the cylinder head and sealed with a special integrated crush washer. Refer to your workshop manual for the correct gap setting.

What is the NGK equivalent of the Champion N5C spark plug?
The Champion N5C is a relatively hot, non-projected spark plug. Its heat range is comparable to the NGK B6ES. On the NGK scale, lower numbers mean a hotter plug, as NGK's spark plug basics guide explains. If your engine needs a projected-tip plug (NGK BP6ES), choose the Champion N9YC spark plug instead.
Which Triumph motorcycles use the Champion N5C, and will it fit my 650?
The N5C is meant for 1979-1983 Triumph 750 twins, such as the T140E and T140D, with 7.9:1 compression pistons. Independent fitment charts like Biker Rated's Triumph spark plug chart also list the NGK B6ES heat range for the T140E/D. We don't recommend the N5C for BSA or Triumph 500 and 650 twins, because its hotter heat range can cause detonation in those engines. Those models usually need a colder plug, such as the Champion N3C, Champion N4C, or Champion N2C.
How do I gap and install the Champion N5C on my Triumph?
Always set the gap to the figure in your Triumph workshop manual and check it with a feeler gauge, as Champion's gapping guide advises. Out of the box, the N5C is preset to about 0.026 in (0.64 mm), according to O'Reilly's N5C listing. It has a 13/16 in hex, and the usual installation torque is 25-30 Nm. A magnetic spark plug socket set makes fitting easier. After a ride, look at the plug's color to confirm the heat range suits your bike, using NGK's guide to reading spark plugs. Light tan or gray means it's running well.
