In production since the early 1970s, the Boyer Bransden electronic ignition system has been the standard that other manufacturers have copied. The Mark IV is the latest iteration of the 12 volt electronic ignition kit designed for use on side-points Norton Commando 750 and 850 twin-cylinder engines. Can also be fitted to late Atlas and early Commando 750 models with points ignition located in the previous magneto and distributor ignition position, located behind the timing cover. Most electronic ignition systems require less system resistance for optimal performance, so two 6 volt coils wired in series, or alternatively, a single 12 volt dual-lead coil is recommended for fitment when installing the Boyer EI kit. Coils are sold separately.

Mechanical contact breaker points and advance units are prone to wear and require more frequent attention, while the benefits of electronic ignitions on vintage British motorcycles are easy starting, stable idling, smoother running, and improved fuel economy. Once the installation is complete and the ignition timing correctly set, electronic ignitions rarely need any further corrections or maintenance.
Prior to installation of the electronic ignition, the original points plate and mechanical auto-advance unit must be removed. Once the original contact points ignition components are removed from the timing chest, the new electronic ignition components are fitted and static timing can be set, followed by precise strobe timing with the engine running. The installation instructions are clear and easy to follow. Care must be taken to ensure the integrity of the ignition switch, charging system, including the battery, and all electrical connections.
