Dating back to 1976, TJ Wassell Engineering Ltd has been producing exhaust system components for vintage British motorcycles employing traditional handmade methods used originally to maintain authenticity. This set of balanced exhaust pipes were specified for the 1969-1970 Triumph 650 twins, with the integrated stubs for fitment with the balance tube fitted from 1969-onward for the road-going models. May also be suitable fitment for earlier unit-construction 650 twins, if the balanced exhaust system is desired. While the exhaust pipes are finished to a high standard, individually hand-crafted pipes may contain markings from manufacturing and there may be residual polish from the factory that can be buffed out to a nice lustre.

Manufactured in the UK to exacting specifications by TJ Wassell, these exhaust headers are chrome plated and feature short stubs for fitment of the crossover balance tube. The flanged cups measure 1-3/4″ OD to fit over 1-5/8″ exhaust spigots at the cylinder head. The OD of the header pipes measures 1-3/8″ and is flared to 1-1/2″ at the terminus of the pipes.

The balance tube on Triumph twin-cylinder engines allows each cylinder to exhaust through both silencers, which reduces noise, improves low-end torque, and smooths out the exhaust note. The addition of the tube also acts as a physical brace between the two header pipes, resulting in stabilization of the entire exhaust system.

The balance tube offers rigidity to the exhaust system when correctly installed, but does add an extra step to the installation. It is recommended that the entire exhaust system be loosely fitted together to allow for final alignment corrections prior to tightening up the fasteners.

Please note: Due to varying bans on the use of hexavalent chrome in the chroming process, this item will have varying appearance different than OEM standards. Chromers are frequently using trivalent in their processes. “It’s just not the same color. Hexavalent has that clear blue sheen, but trivalent is more grayish and smoky. Trivalent will not replace the look of hexavalent.”
